what are mala beads?
Mala beads are an ancient counting device that has been used for prayer and meditation for thousands of years. It is through the recitation of mantras or breaths in a repetitive fashion that we can achieve mindfulness, relaxation and centering of oneself. Malas have a deeply rooted history in Buddhism and Hinduism, as they are the oldest form of prayer bead in the world. Modern malas can be crafted with gemstones unique to individual intentions. They help people to count their mantras, concentrate on breaths or achieve relaxation. While often used in prayer, malas can be used by anyone to help energize, align and find balance. They are also used as a symbolic piece of jewelry to carry one’s yoga or meditation practice with them off the mat.

how do I use my Malas?
Your mala can be used to help you reach a mindful state through the practice of meditation. Simply recite your mantra as you pass over each bead, being sure to remain calm and focused on your words and thoughts. Ensure that your index finger never touches the beads during meditation. Once you meet the guru bead, be sure not to pass over it. Instead rotate the mala in the opposite direction. Our malas come in various bead counts to provide flexibility for longer and shorter sessions, with the most common being 108 beads. At the end of the mala, you will take time for quiet reflection on the guru bead. At this time it is recommended to sit for 2 -5 minutes to feel the reverberation of the mantra in your body and mind. The guru bead is also chosen for its significance to the wearer, and allows for a celebration of one’s own achievements and appreciation for the art of meditation.
